Terrible flood situation in Bangladesh
The world's worst flooding since 1961 has killed at least 438 people, according to government figures released on Saturday. Around half a million homes have been damaged or destroyed, while many areas remain cut off from food, clean water and medical help.In the capital Dhaka alone, some 1.7 million people are affected by the floodwaters. Widespread damage was reported in the north-western district of Kurigram where parts of the country's only major international airport were inundated.Dhaka's chief information commissioner said that about 300,000 people had been evacuated. At least two dozen districts around the city are under water.
Floods have hit 16 regions across nine divisions of Bangladesh, officials say. Officials told Reuters news agency that there were no plans to declare a state of emergency.According to local media reports, several rivers in the area have burst their banks.
