How to be a Teacher

1. Be aware that they are learners. Teachers don’t teach, they guide and encourage their students to learn. If you want them to take your class seriously, make sure they know you care about them. Don’t just show up for work, but treat them like people who need guidance and help. When you interact with them, do so openly and honestly.

2. Show that you care about education. Many educators are not paid well and may struggle financially. This makes it easy to lose sight of what they do. Make sure that teachers have good working conditions and adequate pay. Give them time off if needed to spend time with their families. Create a culture where teachers can succeed, and let parents and community members know how much they mean to you.

3. Ask questions. Keep asking questions until you get the answers you seek. Don’t allow yourself to believe that you already know everything. Asking questions helps you learn, and it opens the door to discussion. Discussing ideas allows everyone to think critically and come up with solutions to problems.

4. Remember that teaching takes practice. Start small and build from there. A lot of teachers will tell you that they aren’t good at anything, but this isn’t true. Most people can improve over time. Practice being patient while others learn. You can even use this to your advantage – remember that some people are slower than others and will need more opportunities to succeed before they catch up.

5. Don’t be afraid to fail. Mistakes happen, and learning from them is valuable. People often criticize young children for making mistakes, but in reality, we only regret our failures after they occur. We should never feel ashamed of trying something new or failing at it, since those experiences will shape us into better versions of ourselves.

6. Prepare ahead of time. Make sure you have enough materials ready to go. Have a plan for each lesson, including a way to assess their progress. Let your class know what they need to do to prepare for upcoming lessons.

 1. Be open-minded

 2. Love what you do

 3. Have patience

 4. Don't take yourself too seriously

 5. Know your subject

 6. Have respect for others

Know your students.

You have to know what they like and dislike. What are their strengths and weaknesses? Are they the type that can take direction well? Do you need to get them excited about learning?

Have a plan.

Your first goal should always be to establish goals that are attainable. This means that your students will understand where they want to go and how to get there. If your students don’t have a clear idea of what they want to do after you graduate, you might not be able to help them reach their goals. Be flexible! Don’t set yourself up for failure because you think that your students aren’t going to be able to move forward from what they learned in high school.

Show them how to succeed.

Show your students how to complete tasks easily, efficiently, and effectively. You don’t want them to feel lost while trying to learn something new; instead, you want them to feel confident in themselves.
