6 ways to start a business
1. Business Plan
This is what separates entrepreneurs from non-entrepreneurs. A good business plan spells out how your venture will work and what financial success looks like. In addition to this, you have to write down everything that needs to happen, including research about your market, competition and any other information that might help make your business successful. This is where you can include your goals and dreams!
2. Networking
Networking has been proven time and again to be very beneficial when starting a business. You need to build a network that will help you along the way. Think about who you already know and create relationships with them. Ask for advice, ask for recommendations, ask for introductions...but always keep in mind that people are often looking to help others succeed just as much as they want to help themselves.
3. Marketing
You have to think about marketing early. Make sure you develop a strategy for marketing early on. If you wait until you actually launch your product, then its too late. Your competitors will have had their chance to do research and get ahead of you. Do not let your product sit around untouched. Get it out into the public eye now!
4. Find a concept that people want.
To find a concept that people want, look at what your target market wants or needs. What problem does this industry solve? If you can't answer this question, don't get into entrepreneurship! Your product or service has to be something that your customers need and are willing to pay for. As soon as you figure out what problem your products/services address, you have already found a great niche. This is how you separate yourself from other entrepreneurs who try to compete on price alone.
5. Make sure you have enough capitalization to make it work.
In any business, whether it's big or small, you'll need money to start. You may have ideas but no way to execute them if you don't have funds. Depending on your idea, you might require a lot of initial funding (e.g., to hire employees) or less funding (e.g. to buy equipment). Either way, you should always plan ahead and think about how much cash you'll need, and when. The sooner you raise the capital, the better off you're going to be.
6. Be prepared to work hard.
Yes, this sounds obvious but so many entrepreneurs forget this step. They think they're going to build their dream business overnight, then wake up one day and realize the reality is not what they had imagined. Every entrepreneur starts his or her journey with a vision of what success looks like and where he or she would ultimately like to be. However, there will be bumps along the way and obstacles to overcome. Do not give up after a setback, learn from it and move forward.
